TVTC - Tennis Skills and Drills

Skills and Drills, a new series of tennis lessons sponsored by the Tellico Village Tennis Club (TVTC), helps tennis players learn about and enhance their tennis skills. Skills and Drills sessions will be led by a development group composed of local club-level players who have volunteered to share their tennis experience and acquired skills. 

Skills and Drills exists for Tellico Village intermediate and advanced tennis players (players at the club level) wanting to improve their tennis game. Singles and doubles players, male and female, benefit from participating. It differs from Rusty Rackets which exists for beginning tennis players or individuals who have not played for a while. Skills and Drills, a free benefit of TVTC club membership, is led by local tennis players, just like you.

The initial plan is to offer one month of Skills and Drills each quarter. The month-long Skills and Drills session will offer four different lessons, a different lesson each week.

Skills and Drills will be taught at a prime time yet to be determined time (for example, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. till noon) at The Chota Recreation Center. Session leaders will follow a common lesson plan and may include Youtube™ videos that participants can view prior to the session.  Court-side lessons will consist of explanations, demonstrations, and of course, plenty of practice.

The first Skills and Drills session will include the following topics.

• Serve Placement.
• Forehand Volley (RH) or Backhand Volley (LH)
• Offensive Lob
• To Be Announced

Depending upon session leader availability, other topics may include: 

• Improving your serve.
• Two handed backhand.
• Returning serves.
• Developing consistency with your forehand.
• Backhand slice.
• Net play and improving your poach.
• Top-spin serve.
• Overheads.
• Doubles strategy.

TVTC club members will receive an email from TVTC about upcoming Skills and Drills events. Registration to participate is not needed; tennis players will simply bring their racket and a can of used balls to participate in the sessions of interest to them.

Promoting player development and increasing court usage is key to the success of the club.    The TVTC board has approved the formation of a Skills and Drills Development Group. 

The Skills and Drills Development Group (SDDG) will identify TVTC members that have demonstrated mastery of a particular stroke, shot or strategy and are willing to share their methodology with fellow TVTC members in a Skills and Drills session. In addition, SDDG members will support session leaders with the development and review of lesson plans, provide court assistance and coordinate court reservations with Tellico Village Recreation Department.  The initial SDDG will consist of two men and two women for 2024.   Questions about Skills and Drills or the development group can be directed to Jeff Kaeppel (256) 684-6467 or [email protected].
